    The emissivity measurement apparatus is a laboratory setup used to determine the emissivity of a test surface, i.e., the ratio of thermal radiation emitted by a surface to that emitted by a black body at the same temperature. It demonstrates how surface properties like color, polish, and texture affect heat radiation. ⸻ Main Components 1. Test Plate/Surface – A metallic plate (often brass or mild steel) with one side coated (black paint, enamel, or polished surface) for emissivity comparison. 2. Heater – An electrical heater attached to the back of the test plate to raise its temperature. 3. Thermocouples / Temperature Sensors – Fixed on the test surface and surroundings to measure temperature rise. 4. Radiation Pyrometer / Temperature Indicator – Measures the radiative temperature of the surface. 5. Cooling Arrangement – Natural convection to the surroundings. 6. Power Supply & Control Unit – To supply and regulate heat input to the heater. ⸻ Working Principle • The test plate is heated electrically to a uniform steady temperature. • One surface of the plate is coated black (considered a nearly perfect emitter, emissivity ≈ 1), while the other is left as a polished or coated test surface. • The heat loss by radiation from both surfaces is measured using temperature sensors and radiation laws. • Emissivity (\varepsilon) is calculated by comparing the radiation from the test surface with that from the black surface: \varepsilon = \frac{Q_{test}}{Q_{black}} = \frac{T_{test}^4 - T_{sur}^4}{T_{black}^4 - T_{sur}^4} where • T_{test} = Temperature of the test surface (K) • T_{black} = Temperature of the black surface (K) • T_{sur} = Surrounding temperature (K) ⸻ Applications • To study and compare emissivity of different surface finishes (polished, dull, painted). • To understand thermal radiation concepts in heat transfer. • Widely used in heat transfer laboratories for engineering students.

    A separating and throttling calorimeter is an apparatus used to determine the dryness fraction (quality) of steam, i.e., the proportion of dry steam present in a steam sample. Since wet steam contains both water particles and vapor, it is important to measure its quality for efficiency and performance analysis of steam power plants and thermal systems. Construction The calorimeter is usually made up of two main parts: 1. Separating Calorimeter: • This is the first chamber into which the steam sample enters. • It works on the principle of sudden change in direction and velocity of steam flow. • Moisture droplets, being heavier than steam vapor, get separated by impact and gravity and are collected at the bottom in a water collector. • The relatively dry steam then passes into the next chamber. 2. Throttling Calorimeter: • The partially dried steam from the separator enters the throttling section. • Here, the steam is passed through a small orifice/throttle valve which suddenly reduces its pressure. • Due to throttling process (isenthalpic expansion), the steam becomes superheated (provided the initial dryness fraction is not too low). • The pressure and temperature of the superheated steam are then measured using a manometer/pressure gauge and thermometer. Working Principle • In the separating section, most of the free water particles are removed. • The steam, still possibly containing some moisture, is then throttled in the throttling calorimeter, which causes the wet steam to become superheated. • By measuring the final pressure and temperature of the steam after throttling, the amount of superheat is calculated. • Using steam tables and energy balance, the dryness fraction (x) of the original steam sample is determined. Applications • Used in laboratories and industries to measure the quality of steam supplied to turbines, engines, or process equipment. • Helps in analyzing boiler performance and efficiency. Advantages • More accurate than a simple separating calorimeter (which alone cannot remove all moisture). • Suitable for a wide range of steam qualities. Limitations • Not accurate if the steam is very wet (dryness fraction less than ~0.7), since throttling may not superheat it. • Requires careful measurement of temperature and pressure.

Heater & Control Unit: • Nichrome wire heater is wound inside the test section. • Electrical input to the heater is controlled using a variac/voltmeter-ammeter setup. • This provides known and adjustable heat input. 4. Temperature Sensors (Thermocouples): • Thermocouples are placed at different points along the test section to measure surface temperature of the tube. • One thermocouple measures inlet air temperature and another measures outlet air temperature. 5. Measuring Instruments: • Voltmeter and Ammeter → to measure electrical power supplied to the heater. • Manometer or Anemometer → to measure airflow rate. • Digital temperature indicator → to display thermocouple readings. 6. Insulation: • The test section is insulated with glass wool/ceramic wool to reduce heat loss to the surroundings. ⸻ Working Principle: • Air is forced through the test section by the blower. • The heater supplies a known amount of heat to the tube. • Heat is transferred from the tube wall to the flowing air by forced convection. • The rise in air temperature (difference between inlet and outlet) and the surface temperatures of the tube are measured. • From the data, the heat transfer coefficient (h) and Nusselt number (Nu) can be calculated for different airflow rates. ⸻ Applications: • To study the variation of heat transfer coefficient with Reynolds number. • To experimentally verify correlations for forced convection heat transfer. • Useful in understanding practical applications like cooling of electronic devices, heat exchangers, and HVAC systems.

    Plate type heat exchanger consists of frame in which independent metal plates are clamped between a head and follower. The plates are sealed at their outer edges and around the ports by gaskets, which are so arranged that the liquid and the heating/cooling media are directed alternately into passages formed between the plates. The hot fluid enters at the top on the right side of the fixed end cover and flows downwards through alternate channels between the plates. The Hot fluid leaves the exchanger through a connection at the bottom of the fixed end cover. The cold fluid enters at the bottom of the left side of the fixed end cover. The cold fluid flows in counter current flow through alternate channels between the plates and leaves the exchanger at the top on the left side of the fixed end cover.
