A Venturimeter apparatus is a hydraulic equipment used to measure the flow rate (discharge) of incompressible fluids flowing through a pipe. It works on the principle of Bernoulli’s theorem, which states that an increase in velocity is accompanied by a decrease in pressure. Main Components 1. Inlet Section • A straight pipe section where fluid enters. 2. Converging Cone • Gradually reduces diameter, increasing fluid velocity and decreasing pressure. 3. Throat Section • Narrowest part of the Venturimeter. • Maximum velocity, minimum pressure. 4. Diverging Cone • Expands diameter, reducing velocity and recovering pressure. 5. Manometer / Differential Pressure Gauge • Measures pressure difference between the inlet and throat. 6. Water Supply System • Supply pump with flow control valve. 7. Collecting Tank (optional) • Used to determine discharge manually. ⸻ Working Principle • Fluid enters the Venturimeter through the inlet. • As it passes through the converging section into the throat, its velocity increases and pressure drops. • The pressure difference between inlet and throat is measured using a manometer. • Using this pressure difference, flow rate is calculated using standard Venturi equations.

Piezometer Tubes / Manometer: Multiple tapping points along the duct connected to piezometer tubes to measure pressure heads at different sections. 3. Water Supply Tank & Pump: Provides a continuous and regulated water flow through the test section. 4. Flow Control Valve: Regulates the discharge in the test section. 5. Measuring Tank & Stopwatch: Used to determine the actual discharge by volumetric method. 6. Scale / Graduated Board: For reading piezometer tube levels. ⸻ Working Principle • Water is allowed to flow steadily through the converging–diverging section. • As per Bernoulli’s theorem: \frac{p}{\rho g} + \frac{V^2}{2g} + z = \text{Constant} where • \frac{p}{\rho g} = Pressure head • \frac{V^2}{2g} = Velocity head • z = Elevation head • At the throat (narrow section), velocity increases and pressure decreases, which is indicated by the fall of piezometer levels. • By measuring piezometer readings and discharge, Bernoulli’s equation is verified experimentally. ⸻ Applications • Verification of Bernoulli’s theorem in hydraulics laboratories. • Demonstrates energy conversion between pressure head and velocity head. • Helps in understanding flow behavior in nozzles, Venturi meters, and orifices.

    The Pitot Tube Apparatus is an experimental setup used to measure the velocity of fluid flow in a pipe or channel using the principle of pressure difference. The apparatus consists of a Pitot tube, which is a small L-shaped tube inserted into the flow stream. It measures the stagnation (total) pressure at its front opening and the static pressure through side openings on the pipe wall. The pressure difference between stagnation and static pressures is related to the velocity head of the fluid, which can be calculated using Bernoulli’s equation. ⸻ Main Components 1. Pitot Tube – L-shaped tube for measuring stagnation pressure. 2. Manometer – U-tube manometer (or digital pressure gauge) connected to the Pitot tube and static tap to record pressure difference. 3. Transparent Pipe/Channel – Carries the fluid (usually water or air) where the Pitot tube is inserted. 4. Pump/Blower – Provides continuous fluid flow through the system. 5. Control Valves – To regulate discharge and flow rate. 6. Measuring Tank / Volumetric Tank – Used to measure the actual flow rate for comparison. ⸻ Working Principle • When fluid enters the open end of the Pitot tube, it comes to rest (stagnates), creating stagnation pressure. • The static pressure is measured at the side wall of the pipe. • The difference in levels in the manometer gives the pressure difference (ΔP). • Using Bernoulli’s theorem, velocity is calculated as: V = \sqrt{\frac{2 \Delta P}{\rho}} where: • V = velocity of fluid • \Delta P = pressure difference • \rho = density of fluid ⸻ Applications • Measuring flow velocity in pipes and open channels. • Calibration of flow meters. • Study of Bernoulli’s principle in hydraulics labs.     The apparatus has been designed to demonstrate the phenomenon of cavitation. The present set-up consists of a test section made of Acrylic having conversion and diversion section. Pressure tapings at appropriate position are provided. This test section is having one control valve at upstream side to regulate the water flowrate. Two pressure gauges are connected to these taping which give the pressure readout at the time of flow passing through this test section. Present set-up is self-contained water re-circulating unit, provided with a sump tank, centrifugal pump etc. Water is pumped by means of centrifugal pump and passing through the test section, it returns back to the sump which make the system re-circulating type. Flow of water is diverted either to measuring tank or sump tank with the means of a flow diverter, when needed. Flow control valve and by-pass valve are fitted in water line to conduct the experiment on different flow rates. Flow rate of water is measured with the help of measuring tank with piezometer and stopwatch. The supplied set-up is complete in all respect. Only water supply and electricity supply is to be provided by the end user for running the set-up.     The Hele–Shaw apparatus is a laboratory setup designed to study the flow of fluid between two closely spaced parallel plates, which approximates two-dimensional potential flow. It is widely used in fluid mechanics experiments to visualize flow patterns around objects and to study flow through porous media. ⸻ Main Components: 1. Transparent Plates • Two flat transparent glass or acrylic plates placed very close together with a narrow gap (1–5 mm). • The narrow spacing ensures that flow between the plates is essentially two-dimensional. 2. Flow Chamber • The gap between the plates forms a thin cavity through which the fluid flows. • The chamber may include arrangements to insert models/obstacles (cylinders, aerofoil shapes, etc.) to visualize flow around them. 3. Inlet and Outlet System • Fluid (generally water mixed with dye or colored solution) enters from one side of the plates and leaves through the opposite side. • A constant head tank or pump is provided to maintain uniform flow. 4. Dye Injection System • Fine tubes are used to inject dye streaks into the flow field to visualize streamlines. 5. Measuring Devices • Flow control valves, rotameter for flow measurement. • A lighting arrangement is often used to clearly observe flow patterns. ⸻ Working Principle: • Water (or another fluid) is supplied to the narrow gap between the plates. • Because the spacing is very small compared to the plate dimensions, the velocity distribution across the gap is parabolic (like laminar flow between parallel plates). • The resulting motion is similar to potential flow in two dimensions. • When models (cylinders, airfoils, etc.) are placed in the gap, streamline patterns around them can be observed by injecting dye. • This helps in studying flow separation, circulation, and wake formation. ⸻ Applications / Experimental Use: • To visualize flow patterns around objects (cylinder, aerofoil, flat plate, etc.). • To study potential flow theory and compare with theoretical streamlines. • To simulate flow through porous media. • To understand concepts like stagnation points, separation, and wake formation.

    A cyclone separator is a vertical cylinder with the inlet stream introduced tangentially near the top, giving the suspension a spinning rotation in the cylinder. The centrifugal force acting on the particles tends to throw them radically to the sides of the cylinder as they spiral downward to a conical bottom where they are removed.A collector is fitted at the bottom & the induced draft blower is used to create the air stream. The classified air leaves the cyclone through a pipe extended down into the cyclone & passes through blower delivery side fitted with fine screen cloth bag to avoid dust expansion in the laboratory.
